Should You Fertilize in Winter? (Short Answer: Usually No)
As March rolls in, it’s tempting to restart all the plant routines at once — including fertilizing. The days are longer, the sun feels stronger, and growth seems imminent.
But here’s the truth: most houseplants are still waking up, not fully awake.
Light has improved, but root systems lag behind what we can see above the soil. Feeding too early can stress roots and cause more harm than good.
You may be ready to fertilize if:
- Your plant has consistent new growth across multiple nodes
- Soil is drying faster week over week
- The plant is receiving strong, reliable light
For everyone else? Hold off just a bit longer.
Think of early March as the warm-up stretch — not the workout.
